Making the step to purchasing your first home is a huge milestone in your life. There’s nothing quite like the feeling you get when you are truly the king of your castle. Plus, owning a home just makes sense when the financial differences between ownership and renting are compared side-by-side.
The problem with choosing your first home, is that since you are a first time home buyer, you’re probably not exactly sure what to look for. Well, there are some basic qualities that vary from house-to-house, and you should decide exactly what you are looking for before you even begin house hunting.
First off, keeping in mind what is available within your price range, what type of house are you looking for? Do you want a house for entertaining? If so, there would be certain features and requirements you would want for that, such as a big kitchen, and an open floor plan. Depending on your location, an outdoor entertaining area could be useful. If you’re going to have guests, a guest room or suite is a nice bonus.
Are you planning on starting a family? If so, a big back yard away from major roads, a split floor plan with a private master suite, and a lot of room between you and the kid’s rooms for noise dampening purposes (and added privacy) could be a great perk.
Another thing to keep in mind is garage bays. While you can always just leave your cars parked outside, a garage is nice for those days where you have to carry in groceries and it’s pouring rain outside.
From that point, you should have a fairly decent idea of what you’re looking for. Before even contacting an agent, it is wise to look at some listings online to see how your desires match up with your budget. If things don’t exactly click into place, you may have to alter your budget to include pricier homes, or skimp back on what you’re looking for in a home.
Doing your research online in this way helps prepare you to look at homes in person. It’s important to be prepared, because real estate agents can sometimes be a little pushy, and may talk you into making an offer on a home when you’re not yet fully prepared to make a purchasing decision.
